A Journey of Purpose:
My name is Jose Villarreal, and my journey began in 2008 when I took a leap of faith and started working for the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). It wasn’t just a job for me; it was a calling to serve and make a difference in the lives of students. However, in 2010, a new mission beckoned, one that would take me and my family on an adventure around the globe.
With a heart full of purpose, I left my position at DPSCD and embarked on a transformative journey into the mission field. For the next fifteen years, my family and I traveled to remarkable places, immersing ourselves in diverse cultures and communities. We lived in Africa, where we connected with vibrant communities and witnessed the strength of resilience. In Brazil, we danced to the rhythms of life, learning the importance of joy and togetherness. Finally, our last post took us to Nicaragua, where we spent five enriching years, sharing our skills and fostering connections with the local people.
As much as I cherished these experiences, the time came for a new chapter. My heart longed for stability, especially for my children. I wanted them to experience the educational opportunities that the United States offers, so we made the decision to return home. It was bittersweet to leave behind the beautiful landscapes and friendships we had cultivated, but I knew this move was essential for my family's future.
Upon returning to the States, I sought out a familiar place where I could contribute once again. I found my way back to DPSCD, where my journey had begun. It felt like coming home. I was excited to bring the lessons I had learned from my travels into the classroom, where I could inspire a new generation of students.
Now, as I walk the halls of Western International High School, I carry with me the stories, cultures, and experiences from around the world. My mission remains the same: to educate, inspire, and empower young minds. I am grateful for the journey that brought me here, and I look forward to planting new seeds of knowledge and hope in the hearts of my students.
This is my story—a story of purpose, adventure, and the unwavering belief in the power of education.
